Concept
The cantor today is far more than only a prayer leader (Chazan) at synagogue services, but is also expected to take care of the entire musical community life - liturgical and secular - which requires inter alia competence in music education and music theory as well as knowledge in different areas of Jewish and general music culture. Beyond, especially in smaller communities the cantor should at the same time be a religious education teacher.
Education at the Cantorial School is based on three pillars:
- Vocationally oriented studies in liturgical singing by well-known eduators – Cantors and Rabbis - at the Abraham Geiger College
See here for our complete Curriculum. - High academic standards with a broad selection of courses at Potsdam University, leading to a B. A. in Jewish Studies (major subject) with Music Science (minor subject) at Potsdam University or the possibility to earn a Master’s degree in Jewish Studies under certain conditions.
- Nationwide placements in Jewish communities and schools as well as concert performances.
After completion of all studies and endorsement by the Abraham Geiger College, follows the formal installation (investiture) of the Cantor. Also the government approval for teaching qualification is given as a result of the academic degree at Potsdam University.
The Abraham Geiger College Cantorial School is led by the Abraham Geiger College’s Rector, Rabbi Professor Dr. Walter Homolka. The academic education of the cantorial students is coordinated by the Academic Director who is also Senior Lecturer at Potsdam University. Practical Education in liturgical singing is coordinated by the Program Director (a Cantor).
